The optional built-in compressor and filter supplies air for the FID detector to eliminate the need for a bulky air cylinder. The ultra-quiet compressor delivers 1000ml/ min. of air at 10psi. A convenient On/ Off switch is located on the front of the GC. Many GC configurations can then be operated for weeks with just a single small tank of hydrogen as the carrier gas supply and FID combustion source - a tremendous convenience for field operation.

The air compressor is shown at right mounted in the 8610C GC mainframe.

VACUUM PUMP INTERFACE (BUILT INTO GC CHASSIS)

The vacuum pump interface consists of a mains power (110 or 220 VAC ) outlet on the side of the 8610C or 310 GC into which a user-supplied vacuum pump is plugged. The PeakSimple data system can turn the power to this receptacle on/off thus controlling the vacuum pump. Typically the vacuum pump is used to draw gaseous samples through the traps for ambient air monitoring applications, or to load the loop of a gas sampling valve by pulling sample gas from a remote location. Because the vacuum pump can be turned on for a precise length of time, the gas flow through the traps is very reproducible (approx. 100ml/min ).

REPLACEMENT METHANIZER TUBE

The SRI Methanizer consists of a 6" x 1/8" stainless steel tube which is mounted alongside the edge of the heated valve oven, and thermostatted to 380ºC. The tube is packed with a special nickel catalyst powder. Column effluent is mixed with 20 ml/min of hydrogen just prior to the methanizer entrance. Under these conditions, CO and CO2 are converted to methane while passing through the methanizer.

Hydrocarbons such as ethane, propane, etc. pass through the methanizer unaffected. Because the CO and CO2 are converted to methane, they can be detected by the FID down to 1 ppm, whereas the TCD can only detect CO or CO2 at 100 ppm at best. Detection limits are thus improved by a factor of 100. It is important to remember that the methanizer is located after the column ( and usually after the TCD detector ), so the CO and CO2 peaks pass through the column and TCD cell as CO or CO2. They are not converted to methane until they exit the column and TCD, so the retention times are not affected. The methanizer can not be mounted unless the GC is already configured with a valve oven. Methanizer tubes can be poisoned by large amounts of sulfur gas.
