The SRI Explosives GC utilizes
the Thermionic Ionization Detector (TID) for the detection of
many nitroaromatic explosives such as RDX (C4) and HMX.
Unlike immunoassay or colorimetric detection methods, the
Explosives GC can separate and detect all nitroaromatic
compounds even in the presence of interferences which may
compromise other detection techniques. For TNT and some
other nitroaromatics, the detection limits of 1ppb are
possible.
This GC can operate on air
alone, for both the TID make-up gas, and carrier gas
(supplied by the built-in air compressor) for the detection of
nitroaromatics. When nitroamines are also to be
detected, nitrogen must be used as the carrier gas. This
makes this GC extremely easy to use in the field for the
monitoring and screening of soils and water for possible
explosives contamination.
