The SRI
Thermal Desorber accessory permits volatile and
semi-volatile compounds in soil or other solid
matrixes to be injected with little or no sample
preparation, and with very high sensitivity. Up
to one gram of soil is loaded into a reuseable
glass tube, and secured in place with plugs of
glass wool. The tube is then inserted into the
hot ( 275°C ) thermal desorber fitting which is
mounted in the heated valve oven compartment just
to the left of the main column oven on the 8610C
GC. Because of the large sample size ( up to 1
gram ) an analyte present in the soil at 1ppm
desorbs 1000 nanograms onto the GC column. This
results in very low detection limits in the ppb
range for most compounds.
The SRI
Thermal Soil Desorber is mounted on the left side
of the GC for easy user access and allows for the
deposition of all thermally desorbed compounds
onto the column. Detection limits up to 10ppb are
possible due to SRI's advanced ceramic ignitor
which can be run continuously, preventing the FID
from extinguishing itself from large volumes of
water. The desorber temperature is adjustable
from ambient to 400oC.
