Quadrex offers a complete range of graphite and graphite-Vespel^TM ferrules for capillary column installation which offer a reliable gas tight seal and are specifically designed for use in your GC. When chosing the ferrules you need, remember that there really isn't a "standard" ferrule or GC fitting. Most instrument manufacturers and ferrule suppliers have their own particular designs and dimensions for these components, so be sure you're selecting the ferrules which were designed for your particular GC. This will insure that your column installation will be leak-free. The ferrules we offer match the original design of the appropriate instrument and are also suitable for use in our Capillary Column Quick-Connect.

A QUICK NOTE FOR QUICK-CONNECTTM USERS

The Capillary Column Quick-Connect (CCQC) was designed in conjunction with standard graphite-Vespel™ ferrules which are available on the market today. As we researched instrument fittings and ferrule availability we discovered, much to our frustration, that there really isn't a "standard" fitting or ferrule. Most ferrule suppliers and instrument manufacturers of have their own particular design dimensions for these components. Taking this into consideration, certain "standard" ferrules were chosen to be used in conjunction with particular CCQC's in order to provide excellent column sealing characteristics and ferrule life longevity. An important note to remember: The CCQC is a high tolerance product and ferrule tolerances generally are not. Ferrule lengths can fluctuate as much as 0.010" and the I.D.'s can fluctuate + 0.025". Also, fused silica tubing O.D.'s fluctuate as much as 0.010" (+ 0.005"). Accordingly: the Quick-Connect may not work properly, or at all, if incorrect ferrules are used. We recommend that you utilize the ferrule that was specifically designed for your GC fittings (as in with H-P 5890's) and to use the correct I.D. ferrule that corresponds with the O.D. of the column you are installing. For example, the CCQC for HP-5890 only functions with the HP style short ferrule design.The CCQC for the MSD interface fitting will only work with the special ferrules listed below.

HEWLETT PACKARD 5880, 5890, 5890 Series II
and 6890 GC FERRULES

These HP ferrules are particular in their design because they are much shorter (2.4mm) than other ferrule designs and have a cone angle of 45^o which matches that of the HP injector and detector fittings. Most other ferrule manufacturers and suppliers offer HP "style" ferrules but they do not match the length and cone angle of the original configuration. Subsequently, they may not be compatible with the HP column fittings.

HEWLETT-PACKARD MSD FERRULES

The HP MSD uses a HP short style ferrule as listed above on their standard injector fitting. The HP MSD interface utilizes an SGE fitting which requires the reversing of the ferrule. Accordingly, the flat end of the interface fitting seals against the flat end of the ferrule. Subsequently, the HP-MSD Quick-Connect must use two different styles of ferrules. The problem was solved by manufacturing a custom ferrule which has a small raised ring on the flat end. When sealed with the CCQC, this raised ring compresses additionally in order to provide a vacuum-tight seal.

VARIAN 3000 SERIES GC FERRULES

The ferrules for Varian GCs matches the original Varian configuration. The Varian fitting design totally encases the ferrule, eliminating any gross ferrule deformation and extending ferrule life. The ferrule needed for the Varian CCQC is short. Below are the compatible ferrules.

PERKIN-ELMER AUTOSYSTEM AND OTHER SWAGELOK^TM-STYLE FERRULES

Similar to the HP MSD, the PE Autosystem uses two different fittings for their injector and detector ports. The injector is a 1/ 16" fitting utilizing a reversed ferrule. The detector is an 1/ 8" Swagelok™. We can supply you with a reducing union for the PE Autosystem in order to reduce the detector port fitting to a 1/16" fitting. This then allows for the use of standard Swagelok™-type ferrules. The ferrules listed below can be used with any GC using standard 1/16" 10-32 Swagelok™-type fittings or those instruments which may have odd fitting styles not compatible with available ferrules but which can be adapted to Swagelok™-type fittings. Maximum recommended temperature is 400^oC.

GRAPHITE FERRULES

Graphite ferrules are also highly suitable for capillary column installation and are probably preferred for high temperature GC applications. The pliability of this type of ferrule allows them to be used in any GC fitting.

Ferrule Remover

This is a useful set of tools which remove ferrules that have become imbedded in nuts or fittings. The spiral tapered tip slides into the ferrule easily and grabs tightly on the way out. Useful on ferrules with 0.4mm to 0.8mm I.D.'s.
